when one thinks of color photography, the early 1900’s isn’t generally the time period that comes to mind. it was in 1903, however, that the Lumiére brothers patented the autochrome process giving photographers the gift of color. this advent coincided with the growth of pictorialism–the idea that photography could be used as an art form and should mirror the the style of contemporary paintings. the images that resulted from this combination are amazing–they are light, airy and sensual and many of them seem undeniably modern. the use of color is subtle creating a dreamlike sensation to the photographs.
