if for some strange reason, i was at gunpoint and the question at hand was “who is your favorite artist?” i wouldn’t fumble for a second. the answer is obvious: gustav klimt. his idea of beauty basically defines my aesthetic. his women are beautiful, lost in ecstasy in a golden whirl of ornamentation. his landscapes are dreamlike visions, pixelated and enchanted.
klimt’s gilded creations can be categorized as art nouveau works, however his works are much more stylized and raw than many of his contemporary counterparts’. there is a sense of eroticism in many of his works, for which he was often criticized. for me, it is this rawness juxtaposed with his trademark sinuous decorative quality that makes his works beautiful.
“I have the gift of neither the spoken nor the written word, especially if I have to say something about myself or my work. Whoever wants to know something about me -as an artist, the only notable thing- ought to look carefully at my pictures and try and see in them what I am and what I want to do.”
